Billie Eilish Apologizes For Asian Slurs
Billie Eilish is “appalled and embarrassed” for using a racial slur in a resurfaced video years ago. She wrote on her Instagram Story on Monday after the edited compilation video, in which she appears to say an offensive term featured in Tyler the Creator’s 2011 song “Fish,” gained traction on the internet. “I love you guys, and many of you have been asking me to address this, and this is something that I WANT to address because I’m being labeled something that I am not,” Eilish began her lengthy note. Eilish explained that there’s a video edit of her going around from when she was “13 or 14” in which she “mouthed a word from a song that at the time i didn’t know was a derogatory term” used against members of the Asian community. “I am appalled and embarrassed and want to barf that I ever mouthed along to that word,” Eilish continued. “This song was the only time I’d ever heard that word as it was never used around me by anyone in my family. Regardless of my ignorance and age at the time, nothing excuses the fact is that it was hurtful. And for that I am sorry.” Eilish also explained that the “other video” in the “edited clip” was just her using a “silly gibberish made up voice,” which many interpreted as a fake accent intended to mock Asian people. “Something I started doing as a kid and have done my whole life when talking to my pets, friends, and family,” she explained. “It is absolute gibberish and just me goofing around, and is in NO way an imitation of anyone or any language, accent, or culture in the SLIGHTEST.” Eilish’s apology comes just days after her boyfriend, Matthew Tyler Vorce, apologized for his old, racist social media posts. Eilish didn’t reference Vorce’s apology in her missive.

Nick Cannon’s rumored girlfriend, model Alyssa Scott, seemed to confirm that Cannon is the father of her yet-to-be-born child in an Instagram post on Sunday. She shared a photo of herself wearing a black and blue dress. Also in the photo was a man who seemed to be Cannon – though his face was turned away from the camera, lovingly caressing the model’s baby bump. “Celebrating you today,” Scott wrote over the image. Rumors that the two were expecting a child together began in May when Scott said on Instagram that she planned to name her baby Zen S. Cannon, according to Entertainment Tonight. Just days ago, the rapper and actor welcomed twin sons with Abby De La Rosa. De La Rosa announced their birth on Wednesday on Instagram, sharing a video of her cradling her newborns. She revealed in the post that the boys are named Zion Mixolydian Cannon & ZIllion Heir Cannon. Furthermore, Cannon and his now-ex-girlfriend Brittany Bell welcomed a daughter in December 2020. In an Instagram post, Bell said that the baby was named Powerful Queen Cannon. He famously shares 9-year-old twins Morocco and Monroe with his ex-wife, Mariah Carey.

Pete Davidson Unsure Of SNL Future
Even Pete Davidson isn’t sure about his future on “Saturday Night Live.” He isn’t easing up on the rumors that he’s leaving the NBC sketch series, saying in a new interview that his role is “up in the air.” “I don’t know what the plan is,” he told Gold Derby on Monday. “Everything’s kind of up in the air right now just depending on scheduling.” He said Season 46, which ended in May, was “really emotional” because it was the seventh — and seemingly final — year of his contract. “It is my seventh year, and that’s usually what the contract’s usually for, so it was really emotional,” he shared. “I worked with these guys for a fourth of my life, and I started there with acne and left with tattoos, and it was just, like, a very crazy, long period of time. “I wasn’t ready for the season to end yet because I was really having so much fun,” the “Big Time Adolescence” actor continued. “Just watching it go from one-third of an audience to [one-half] … and the last show was a full audience for the first time, just hearing that laugh, that full room laugh … I was just so emotional.” Davidson previously said he was “ready to hang up the jersey” in regard to his time on “SNL” during a roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter published at the end of May.

Meghan Markle and Buckingham Palace are said to be veering toward a “brutal showdown” amid bullying claims lobbed at the Duchess of Sussex, according to a new report. Markle, who was accused of bullying staffers during her time as a working royal, is requesting the palace issue a “point-by-point” breakdown of the allegations, a source told the Mirror on Monday. “The feeling is this is heading for a brutal showdown between [the palace and] the Duchess of Sussex, who is understood to be disputing all allegations leveled against her,” an insider close to the independent inquiry told the British newspaper. “The palace is taking each and every allegation very seriously and wants to get to the truth of the matter and ensure those speaking up deserve to be heard,” the source continued. The source added that Markle, “is adamant the staff were not up to their job and could not deal with the pressure of working for her and understanding how she wanted things to run.” In March, the palace was said to be bringing in independent investigators to probe the bullying allegations against Markle, who split from the royal family with Prince Harry in early 2020.

Prince Charles Was Questioned About Diana’s Death
Prince Charles was secretly questioned by the U.K. police in 2005 over allegations he plotted to kill his ex-wife, Princess Diana. John Stevens, the former head of Scotland Yard, told the U.K.’s DailyMail he had to “follow the evidence” and question the Prince of Wales over a note Diana wrote claiming he was planning a car accident. According to the outlet, the probe was part of Operation Paget, also known as an investigation into various conspiracy theories – more than 100 of them – surrounding Diana’s death, which was launched by the British Metropolitan Police in 2004. Stevens told the outlet he spoke to Charles about a note that Diana wrote in 1995 which read, “My husband is planning an accident in my car, brake failure and serious head injury,” so that he could marry Tiggy Legg-Bourke, a nanny for their sons Prince William and Prince Harry. The couple divorced a year later in 1996. Charles was interviewed at St. James’s Palace as a witness two years into the investigation after the note became public in 2003. “Yes, allegations had been made about the Prince of Wales and other royals but we had to find or examine the [existing] evidence before we approached him with formal questions,” said Stevens. “We found no other evidence to support the scenario suggested in Diana’s note.” “We were left with the note, which in itself was not enough to make Charles a formal suspect,” Stevens continued. Stevens said Charles fully cooperated with the investigation. “At the end of the day he was incredibly cooperative because he had nothing to hide,” said Stevens. Charles’s father, Prince Philip, declined to assist in the investigation. When asked to comment on the allegations, the Duke of Edinburgh sent a simple message that read: “No, thank you.”

Soggy Cat Rescued From Storm Drain
Police in New York used crowbars, shovels and a fishing net to rescue a soggy cat found trapped in a storm drain. The Suffolk County Police Department said in a Facebook post that Sgt. Phil Dluginski responded alongside officers Officers Juan Echeverry and Victoria Funez to the Bay Shore Road, where a cat was reported trapped in a storm drain. The officers used crowbars to remove the drain cover and found the cat several feet down in the water. The group used shovels and a fishing net to scoop up the wet cat and bring it back to dry land. “It turned out to be a lucky day for this fur baby because a nearby resident decided to give this baby a forever home,” the department said. 8 Foot Python Caught On Long Island
Police responded to a Long Island, N.Y., home at which a more than 8-foot snake was found slithering in the driveway. The Suffolk County Police Department responded to Frances Hughes’ home in Deer Park on Sunday after the woman looked out her kitchen window and spotted the large snake. Officers Argand Reyes and John Angus were able to wrangle the snake into a trash can and transport it to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip. Experts said the snake appears to be a Burmese python, a species that is not legal to keep as pets in New York state. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating the incident. See the pic HERE.

Wild Boar Hops On Subway
A wild boar caused a stir on the Hong Kong subway when it took a ride on a train — and switched trains at a station to evade its pursuers before being captured. Witnesses said the boar boarded the train at the Quarry Bay station and transit employees chased after the wild pig, but it darted off the train a few stations away and boarded a second train. A video of the chase was posted to Facebook by the Hong Kong Wild Boar Concern Group, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the animals. The second train was diverted to a depot where Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department officers were able to safely capture the boar and return it to the wild. See the video HERE.

Lost Hard Hat Found 2000 Miles Away
A Massachusetts man whose hard hat fell into the Atlantic Ocean in 2014 received word that his lost hat washed up 2,000 miles away in Portugal. Conrad Roy Jr., of Fairhaven, said his hat fell into the water while he was working on a job site in New Bedford in 2014. Roy said it came as a surprise when he learned from a Facebook post Sunday that his hat had washed up Portugal’s Azores archipelago. “I just happen to see this post and I’m like, ‘Wow, it looks like my hard hat,’ and I start reading it and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, that is my hard hat,'” Roy told WCVB-TV. Sandra Machado said she spotted the hat’s unnatural color sticking out in the water. “I saw something right in the waves. I went to pick it up and saw a helmet, and the stickers say it was from New Bedford,” Machado said. Roy said he believes the Father’s Day discovery was a message from his son, Conrad Roy III, who died by suicide at age 18 on 2014. He said his son had been on the job site with him when he lost the hat. “I’m happy today because it felt like he brought that to me,” Roy said.

- What Would You Want to Get in the Mail?
If you’re starting from zero, the best question to ask yourself is: How would you want to receive a package in the mail? Are there any local stores with wrapping or presentation that stick out?
What are the most important parts of the experience to you: visually appealing wrapping, communicating and marketing the brand, colorful, themed packaging for individual goods or a fun box with a few free samples thrown in?
Remember that cohesion is important. If you’re a brand with an ongoing following, you’ll want to provide an experience to customers that you can replicate time and time again. If you’re thinking too extravagant and luxurious, you might run into an issue repeating the aesthetic down the line.
- Make it an Experience
Jennifer Robinson owns The Blue Peony, a Langley, Washington, home goods, accessories and sundries business with an online store and physical shop. She’s honed her presentation practices over the years.
But one of the packaging experiences that sticks out to Robinson doesn’t come from her own store. She once received a package that included an envelope indicating that the person should throw its contents in the air when they were excited. Inside was confetti. She loved the interactive element and the fact that the package was giving her something to do — in a controlled setting.
Some business owners opt to include candy or little trinkets with their item. Thinking about the emotions and the actions of your customer is something that can go a long way toward growing a brand. After all, Robinson still remembers that experience.
- Branding is Key
If you’re a handmade brand with an aesthetic that is more indie than perfectly polished, Robinson has an important piece of advice: invest in a stamp with your logo. Each box she sends comes hand-stamped with her logo and business details.
Buying a stamp that can go on plain boxes or brown paper bags is much cheaper than the alternative: hand-printed boxes. But when designing a stamp, try to keep the information to what you think won’t frequently change, such as a handle or business name, rather than things that might, like an address.
- Wrap it Like a Gift
Robinson has a standard system for each of her items. She wraps everything in tissue paper and then ties a package together with salvage fabric scraps from past projects. The fabric is another way to provide an experience — it takes time for the customer to untie the object, creating anticipation.
- Include a Handwritten Note
There’s power in a handwritten note. And in our digital world, that’s especially true. Robinson started her career at Brooks Brothers, which drilled into her the importance of sending a note with each package. If a national business could do that, she thought to herself, then she absolutely could.
Every package she sends comes with a personalized note with a comment about where the customer is from or even a story about what they purchased.
She finds that the notes build a relationship between her and the customers. People tend to write back through email and explain how they found her business or whether the item they are buying is a gift. Creating that bond is a great way to keep customers coming back for more.
- Offer a Gift to Longtime Customers
And for those that are already coming back as longtime repeat customers, Robinson throws in small gifts as a thank-you. She might put in a pot holder or a bookmark or even free samples from her husband’s skin care line. It’s a small investment, but it’s about the payoff.
“It doesn’t cost me much, but it helps with customer attention,” Robinson says.
- Stickers are Built-In Marketing
If you’ve ordered from your local indie store or a beauty chain as big as Glossier, you may have gotten free logo stickers with your order. Much like a stamp on packaging, stickers are an easy way to promote your brand as an ethos to your customer — and the people your customer knows.
Stickers are meant to be seen, so if your brand logo is slapped on a laptop or a water bottle, people might start wondering about your store. It’s a fun and organic way to spread the word.
