Alec Baldwin Investigation
The sheriff investigating the shooting incident involving Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust” said the investigation is now focused on the presence of live ammunition on the set. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza appeared Thursday on the “Today” show, where he discussed the ongoing investigation and noted that the main point that authorities are looking into is how live ammunition made its way to a set that allegedly didn’t require its use. “I think during the interviews, the focus of the investigation is how the live rounds got there, who brought them there and why they were there,” Mendoza explained. “As far as if it’s going to rise to the point of negligence or the point of criminal charges, we’re hoping to work with the district attorney in reference to that so it’s a clear determination if charges should be filed.” Mendoza said during a press conference Wednesday that, despite armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed saying there was no live ammunition kept on set, a live round was recovered in director Joel Souza’s shoulder — that same bullet passed through cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, resulting in her death. In addition to the bullet removed from Souza’s shoulder, investigators found 500 rounds of ammunition, including a mix of blanks, dummy rounds and what appeared to be live rounds. The sheriff noted that he does not believe that live ammunition had any necessity to be on the set and is therefore looking into how and why it was there at all.

Brad Pitt Loses Court Custody Battle
The California Supreme Court refused to consider Brad Pitt’s appeal of a court ruling that disqualified the judge in his custody battle with Angelina Jolie. The court denied a review of a June appeals court decision that said the private judge hearing the case should be disqualified for failing to sufficiently disclose his business relationships with Pitt’s attorneys. The state Supreme Court’s decision finalizes that ruling. It means the fight over the couple’s five minor children — which was nearing an end — could just be getting started. “Ms. Jolie is focused on her family and pleased that her children’s wellbeing will not be guided by unethical behavior,” her attorney, Robert Olson, said in an email. Pitt’s attorney had previously argued that Jolie’s effort to disqualify the judge was aimed at preventing his tentative custody decision, which was favorable to Pitt, from taking effect. A statement from a representative for Pitt on Wednesday said the Supreme Court decision “does not change the extraordinary amount of factual evidence which led the trial judge — and the many experts who testified — to reach their clear conclusion about what is in the children’s best interests.”

Tom Hanks Crashes Another Wedding
Tom Hanks once again had a cameo role in a stranger’s wedding, when he made a surprise appearance last weekend at the Santa Monica, Calif., beach nuptials of brides Diciembre and Tashia Farries. Hanks had been watching the ceremony from afar and was so moved that he decided to approach them afterward, Tashia said on the “Today” show Wednesday. “He said, ‘I saw the ceremony from back there and it had to be one of the most beautiful ceremonies that I’ve ever seen,”’ she recalled. Diciembre said she couldn’t believe her sudden brush with fame. “We were so in our own moment so for him to walk up, it was shocking and took a second for us to realize,” she told the show. “It was the cherry on top for our big day.” In a video of the encounter, wedding guests can be heard exclaiming, “That’s Woody!” referring to Sherriff Woody, whom Hanks voices in the “Toy Story” series. Tashia said. “He gave us love advice and was just so positive and humble.” This isn’t the first time the beloved star has inserted himself into nuptial bliss. In 2016, he surprised a newlywed couple taking their wedding photos in Central Park.

Some Schools Ban Squid Games Costumes
Multiple elementary schools in New York have banned Halloween costumes that depict characters from the hit Netflix show “Squid Game,” citing its mature content and violence. “Squid Game,” which was Netflix’s biggest series launch ever, is about a group of financially struggling adults in South Korea playing deadly, gory versions of children’s games in hopes of winning a cash prize. The superintendent of the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, which includes the elementary schools Enders Road, Mott Road and Fayetteville, told CBS News in a statement that school principals “wanted to make sure our families are aware that it would be inappropriate for any student to wear to school a Halloween costume from this show because of the potential violent messages aligned with the costume.” Parents were informed of the decision in an email, a spokesperson for the school said. Under the Fayetteville-Manlius School District’s guidelines, Halloween costumes with items “that can be interpreted as weapons” like toy swords or guns, and costumes that are “too gory or scary” are not allowed at school events, Superintendent Dr. Craig Tice told CBS News in the statement. Tice said some students have been reenacting games from the show at recess, and that principals have asked families to speak with their children and “reinforce the school message that games associated with violent behavior are not appropriate for recess.” Some parents said the school’s crackdown on costumes is “overbearing,” CBS New York reported.

Dorit Kemsley tried to keep herself out of public view just hours after home invaders reportedly robbed her at gunpoint. An LAPD spokesman confirmed that three men broke into Kemsley’s mansion at 10:50 p.m. PST Wednesday. She had just returned from a trip to London; her husband, Paul “PK” Kemsley, was still abroad at the time of the incident. Two of the suspects allegedly walked into Dorit’s bedroom while she was sleeping, and she woke up to them standing at the foot of her bed. “Don’t hurt my babies. Don’t kill me,” she begged the intruders, according to the Daily Mail. “I’m a mother.” One of the men allegedly responded, “Kill her.” According to TMZ, the criminals took at least $100,000 worth of jewelry and handbags. Bravo is currently filming Season 12 of “RHOBH.”

Senior Softball Team
A Colorado softball team is believed to be the oldest such team in the country, with players ranging from their 50s to their 90s. The Colorado Peaches, a team founded in 1991, features more than 50 players, many of whom are in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Player Fran Simon told KMGH-TV the team is believed to be the “oldest team in the country.” The Peaches took the Silver Medal last year at the World Senior Games tournament in Utah. They did not earn a medal at this year’s event, but they did win a game against the team that went on to claim the gold. “Even if we don’t win, we win,” said player Maggie McCloskey, 90. “The big thing is to be a worthy opponent.” McCloskey said the team almost disbanded in 2012, when about half of the players quit after deciding they were too old. McCloskey and the remaining members were able to rebuild the team after recruiting Gail Klock as their coach. Klock died in March, and the players now wear her number, 23, on their sleeves. “I miss her as a friend,” McCloskey said. “We actually built this together.” See the video HERE.

Bears Crash Wedding Reception
A wedding in Mexico became an even more memorable event for everyone present when the reception was interrupted by an unusual crasher: a bear in search of food. A video posted to TikTok by user @AngieDisa shows the bear knocking over a chair and putting its front paws on a table during dinner at the wedding reception in Chipinque Ecological Park in Nuevo Leon. People can be heard banging on pots and pans in an attempt to scare the bear away as the animal roots around in an apparent search for food. The bear is seen leaving while guests at a nearby table continue eating their meals without any apparent concern for the wedding crasher’s presence. The filmer said another bear was spotted around the hotel the night before the bruin barged into the reception. See the video HERE.

New Bar Sells No Alcohol
A new bar in Iowa offers cocktails, karaoke and pizza, but one common bar feature is absent from the business: alcohol. Unimpaired, which opened its doors this month in Iowa City, is aimed at giving people a place to play games and socialize without the pressure to consume alcohol. Co-founder Amber Haines said the business set its sights on Iowa City after opening its first location in Davenport last year. “I am four years sober; I don’t drink, I still like to go out and socialize. I still like to dance, and sing karaoke, believe it or not. Sober karaoke,” Haines told KCRG-TV. “So, I just thought, why couldn’t there be a place like this? Especially around a college so we can be there for the 18 to 21-year-old crowd.” The bar is partnering with the University of Iowa to offer events for students in an alcohol-free environment.

Water Well Full Of Snakes
A utility worker doing maintenance on a faulty water well in Iowa raised a pipe from the well and discovered it was covered in more than a half dozen snakes. Latimer-based Mort’s Water Company said the worker pulled the pipe up from the malfunctioning well earlier this month and was greeted by 8-9 bull snakes slithering on the structure. The company said in a Facebook post the snakes had apparently slithered into the well “through the top of a poorly sealed well casing.” Mort’s Water Company said the snakes were a surprising sight, but they were not the cause of the well’s issue. The problem turned out to be a pump and motor in need of repair, the business said. Bull snakes can grow up to 6 feet long, but they are non-venomous and not considered to be a threat to humans.
