Harrison Ford Gets Emotional After “Indiana” Trailer

Harrison Ford choked up on Saturday while talking about the fifth “Indiana Jones” installment, which will be his last as the whip-cracking archeologist.   “Thank you for making these films such an incredible experience for all of us, giving the opportunity to us to make these films for you,” an emotional Ford said in a surprise appearance at Disney’s D23 expo in Anaheim, California.   As he stopped for a second to collect himself, a cheer of support rose from the crowd.  “I’m very proud to say that this one is fantastic,” he continued, adding that his co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was on stage with him, “is one of the reasons.”  “‘Indiana Jones’ movies are about fantasy and mystery, but they’re also about heart,” he continued, choking up again for a moment. “We have a really human story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your a–.”  At the end of his speech he joked it would be his last time taking on the role. “This is it!” he kidded with the crowd. “I will not fall down for you again.”  “But thank you so much,” he added.
********He’s 80 YEARS OLD!!! Even the Queen is saying, “Damn!!!”
TOPIC: Who could replace him as Indiana Jones???
*******The new movie is “Indiana Jones and the Enlarged Prostate!!!”

The Crown Pauses Production Following The Queen’s Death

The Crown,” Netflix’s acclaimed series about Queen Elizabeth II and her family, has paused production due to the monarch’s death.  “‘The Crown’ is a love letter to her, and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect,” Peter Morgan, writer of the Emmy-winning drama, said in a brief statement. “I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”  A spokesperson for the series said production was paused on Friday “as a mark of respect” and will also be suspended on the day of the queen’s funeral.  The change in production won’t impact the release of season five of the series, which is scheduled for November.  The fifth season will star Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana. Olivia Williams joins them as Camilla Parker Bowles and Jonny Lee Miller will appear as Prime Minister John Major.
ACCORDING TO THE DAILY MAIL, they are in Barcelona filming the Princess Di crash scenes!! Not a good look when Charles is becoming the new King!!
********Does this make you more or less likely to watch “The Crown??”
*******They could at least do the Queen a solid and cast Liz Hurley in the role for the final season!!!

Ozzy Fans Upset At NBC For Halftime Show

Ozzy Osbourne fans were left scratching their heads after NBC barely aired his NFL halftime show Thursday.  When sportscaster Maria Taylor introduced the performance, he was already in the middle of a new song from his latest album, “Patient Number 9.”  The network then gave a glimpse of 10 seconds of Osbourne on stage before cutting back to Taylor and her colleagues.  Although the rest of his performance did not air, fan videos circulating online show that he sang his hit “Crazy Train” while sportscasters discussed the Los Angeles Rams vs. Buffalo Bills game.  “NBC thinking we’d rather hear a 1st half recap than Ozzy Osbourne’s performance is… puzzling,” one Twitter user wrote of the choice, while others called it “blasphemous” and “trash.”  Another viewer wrote, “As usual NBC finds a way to f–k up a sports broadcast. Ozzy Osbourne is performing? Let’s put our on-air personalities on the screen to yell about what we all just watched.”  The performance marked Osbourne’s second time on stage since undergoing “life-altering” surgery in June.
*******We wee hoping Ozzy might take a few snaps!!!
********The NFL is a giant cluster!! This is just the start!!!
*******One other thing: why don’t the broadcasters EVER give L.A. teams a break???

Elton John Pays Tribute To The Queen

Sir Elton John paid a heartfelt tribute to Queen Elizabeth II during his show in Toronto following the news of the monarch’s death at the age of 96.  Elton, paused his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour gig at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, and shared a musical tribute to the late monarch.  “Today we had the saddest news about the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth,” he said. “She was an inspiring presence to be around — I’ve been around her and she was fantastic. She led the country though some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine care and warmth.”  “I’m 75 — she’s been with me all my life, and I feel very sad that she won’t be with me any more,” he continued. “But I’m glad she’s at peace and I’m glad she’s at rest, and she deserves it because she’s worked hard.  Acknowledging Queen’s decades-long services, he said, “I send my love to her family and her loved ones. She will be missed, but her spirit lives on and we celebrate her life tonight with music — OK?”  John then performed his 1974 hit, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.
**********Thank GOD he didn’t do “Candle in the Wind!!!!”
******Elton was hoping to replace her as Queen, but that gig went to Camilla!

Prince William and Harry Reunite On Orders From The New King

Prince William and Catherine, who were conferred the royal titles of Prince and Princess of Wales by King Charles III, were seen outside Windsor Castle along with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle looking at the floral tributes. A report on DailyMail has suggested that the joint appearance ‘took place after an extended negotiation which delayed the Sussexes arrival by at least 45 minutes’.   DailyMail cited people who were aware of the royal household’s events and said, “Prince William attempted to bury the hatchet by extending an ’11th-hour olive branch’ to his younger brother Prince Harry, by asking him to join him on a walkabout outside Windsor Castle following a phone call with his father Charles III”.  According to reports, a Kensington Palace spokesman has said that the Prince of Wales had invited the Sussexes to join him and the Princess of Wales during yesterday evening’s walkabout.  The Times claimed that the camps required extended negotiations beforehand which delayed their arrival by 45 minutes.  The Sussexes’ friend and preferred journalist Omid Scobie later claimed on Twitter that the invitation was made at the ’11th hour’.
*********Ahhh… families!!!
*****Harry and Meghan are trying to retain their royal titles, which may not happen!! Charles can yank them at any time!!

Timeline For The Queen’s Funeral

The funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth will take place on Sept. 19 and her body will lie in state for four days prior to that, royal officials announced on Saturday.  Here are details about events in the run-up to the funeral as provided so far by Buckingham Palace and other royal officials.

MONDAY

King Charles and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will travel to Edinburgh from London.  At 2:35 p.m. (1335 GMT) the coffin will be taken in a procession from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles’ Cathedral on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile with the king and royal family members following on foot.  The Crown of Scotland will be placed onto the coffin as it is carried inside for a short service.

The king and other royals will hold a vigil at 7:20 p.m. (1820 GMT) and the coffin will remain there for about 24 hours.

TUESDAY

At 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) there will be short prayers at St Giles’ before the coffin is taken to Edinburgh Airport to be flown to London, accompanied by Elizabeth’s daughter Anne, arriving at 8 p.m. (1900 GMT).

It will be taken by state hearse to Buckingham Palace and placed in the Bow Room.

WEDNESDAY

At 2:22 p.m. (1322 GMT), the coffin will be placed on a gun carriage and taken to the Palace of Westminster. The king and other members of the royal family will walk in silence behind.

Windsor is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and has been the family home of kings and queens for almost 1,000 years.

The hearse will travel via the Long Walk to St George’s Chapel for a committal service. There it is expected to be lowered into the royal vault and interred in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, in the North Nave Aisle where the queen’s parents and sister are buried.

The coffin of Prince Philip, the queen’s husband of 73 years who died in April 2021, is expected to be moved from the royal vault at Windsor to be buried alongside his wife.

Grinch of the Week:  Mariah’s Holiday Showdown!-(In Touch)

There’s just one thing Mariah Carey wants for Christmas:  To own it!  The Santa-loving diva, 53, filed to trademark “Queen of Christmas” in early August, but she should have checked her list twice:  Fellow singers Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan aren’t about to put down their jingle bells.  “David Letterman officially declared me the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago, a year before she released ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You,’ and at 81 I’m NOT changing anything,” responded Darlene, who sang her 1963 hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on the late-night host’s shows every December from 1986 to 2014.  “If Mariah has a problem, call David or my lawyer!”  Elizabeth, who exclusively records yuletide carols, already had her attorney file to stop Mariah, saying, “Christmas is for everyone.”

Ty Cobb’s Dentures Up For Auction

A California-based auction company is selling off an unusual piece of Detroit Tigers memorabilia: Ty Cobb’s dentures.  SCP Auctions said in the listing for the false teeth that the upper and lower sets of dentures are included in the lot, alongside a “brass opening device.”  The teeth belonged to Cobb, who played for Tigers from 1905 to 1926 and died in 1961.  “Originally sourced from the collection of Cobb’s biographer Al Stump, our consignor acquired them in the famous Barry Halper sale back in 1999 and has owned them ever since,” the listing reads. “At one point, Cobb’s famous jaws were loaned to the Baseball Hall of Fame where they were displayed in the museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.”  The item description says the “one-of-a-kind artifact has been preserved in immaculate condition since Cobb’s death.”

Squirrel Knocks Out Power

Utility officials in Virginia said 10,000 customers, including at least two schools, were without power for over an hour when a squirrel came into contact with substation equipment.  Dominion Energy spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris said in a Twitter post that the power outage began about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday when a squirrel entered a substation in Virginia Beach.  “The squirrel got between a circuit breaker and a transformer causing a power surge that made the transformer fail,” Harris told WVEC-TV.  The surge caused about 10,000 customers to lose power. Kempsville High School and Fairfield Elementary School were among the customers without electricity.
*******Here in California, we don’t have that excuse!! We just don’t have enough power!! So.. we turn it off!!

Chinese Man Trapped In Hydrogen Balloon

Chinese state media say a man has been found safe after he spent two days aloft in a hydrogen balloon, traveling about 200 miles, after it became untethered and flew away while he was using it to harvest pine nuts from a tree.  The man, identified only by his surname, Hu, and a partner were collecting pine nuts on Sunday in a forest park in Heilongjiang province in northeastern China when they lost control and the balloon sailed off.  The other person jumped to the ground, and a search was launched for the escaped balloon and Hu.  State broadcaster CCTV said rescuers were able to contact the man by cellphone the following morning and instructed him to slowly deflate the balloon to land safely. It took another day before he reached the ground about 320 kilometers (200 miles) to the northeast in Fangzheng region, close to the border with Russia.
*********The Russians were about to shoot down the balloon in a hail of bullets!!!

10 Things You Can Rent Instead of Buy

The Penny Hoarder

  1. A Coffin From a Funeral Home

This is an item that most definitely is used only once. With the average casket carrying a retail price of $2,000 up to $10,000, casket rentals can be a big money saver. Most funeral homes will rent a casket for about $1,000, but salespeople don’t always tell you that when they are trying to sell one. So you might need to come right out and ask your funeral director for particular rental options.  When a customer rents the casket for a loved one, a wooden box actually holds the body in the interior of the casket, which looks much more elegant at a funeral service. The interior box is lowered into the ground and the casket can be rented again.

  1. Baby Gear for Traveling Light

Renting baby equipment whether from a hotel, local agency or big company can save money and stress. Harried parents don’t have to worry about traveling with their own jogging stroller, high chair and crib. And folks hosting young guests don’t have to run out and spend big bucks on supplies they will never use again.  Call ahead when you travel and you’ll find many hotels will rent baby supplies. If you’re staying in a private home or Airbnb, a Google search will find local agencies that rent baby and toddler gear.  Then there are nationwide companies such as BabyQuip and Baby’s Away.

BabyQuip, a “Shark Tank” favorite, has a network of gig-economy folks who go through an extensive training program, background checks and safety checks to qualify. They rent out cribs, car seats, strollers, toys and more.  Prices for products vary from city to city in more than 700 markets across the country. An average street stroller costs $8 a day, safety gates are $2 a day, and a Pack n’ Play with mattress and bottom sheet costs $8 a day.

Each entrepreneur renting their products sets their prices. Delivery costs seem to vary the most from $20 to $100.

Baby’s Away has its own collection of baby supplies in more than 100 cities. Strollers average $7 a day, safety gates $3 a day and a Pack n’ Play $7 a day.

  1. Power Tools

It’s common practice to rent a carpet cleaner from a local Home Depot or Lowe’s, but many consumers don’t know you can rent lots of other power tools as well.  If you’re going to use that tile saw only once, then that’s an obvious thing to rent. Even tools you use once a year on home improvement projects won’t stay in good condition, so it also makes sense to rent them.

Home Depot and Lowe’s have a wide selection of tools — which can be prohibitively expensive to purchase — that are always ready to go and come with expert advice on how to use them.  Renting is less expensive than paying the purchase price and saves on the maintenance costs and repair costs of tools.  “When you rent a tool they are always in good shape, clean and ready to use. No hoses are broken, nothing needs to be replaced or refilled,” said Rob Littke, a builder and handyman in St. Petersburg, Florida. “You never get to a job site and find out it doesn’t work.”

Prices vary based on availability and store location.  At a Home Depot in Durham, North Carolina, a cordless paint sprayer costs $25 for four hours or $36 for the day, while a pressure washer is $58 for four hours or $83 per day.

  1. Pickup Truck for Quick Jobs

It makes more sense to rent a truck instead of hiring a moving company to haul your furniture or paying the additional cost to get a couch or bed delivered. Plus you can hit up your truck-owning friends only so many times.

Pickup truck rentals at Home Depot are $19 for 75 minutes, $129 a day or $903 a week.  Lowe’s charges $19 for 90 minutes or $119 all day.

  1. Camping Gear and Other Sports Equipment

Renting sports equipment is an economical choice for families with children involved in high-end sports. Seasonal sports items like skis and golf clubs can be a costly investment for equipment that is used only a few months out of the year.  Try Friendwitha.com, a peer-to-peer platform for renting sports equipment. You can find folding bikes, snowboards, tennis rackets and more in locations across the country.

Ready to explore the great outdoors? First consider whether it makes the most sense to rent camping gear vs. owning it.  Outdoors outfitter REI rents camping and sports gear in addition to selling it at its palatial stores. Offerings include equipment for camping, downhill skiing, cycling and paddling. The store’s website advises customers to call their local store to see what it rents because not all locations have the same rental inventory.

REI is a co-op, meaning customers can pay a one-time fee of $20 to have a small ownership stake, which comes with benefits. You don’t have to be a member to rent, but when weighing expenses it may be more affordable to pay the $20 to join and get reduced rental fees.  For example, to rent backcountry skis from the store in Asheville, North Carolina, members pay $16 the first night and $10 for subsequent nights, while nonmembers pay $25 the first night and $15 for subsequent nights plus a $100 to $200 deposit.

  1. Musical Instruments

Whether for a child learning an instrument at school or an adult taking up a new hobby, it’s a good idea to start out renting that trumpet, flute or electric guitar. If it’s not going to be a longtime endeavor, you haven’t shelled out as much extra money.

Many local music stores rent instruments, and there’s also an online clearing house, Musicarts.com. Rental fees on instruments can often be applied as your down payment or put toward continuing payments if you end up buying.

  1. Designer Dresses, Work Attire and Casual Clothes

Clothing rentals have become so popular, you can now pay a monthly fee to have a high-quality wardrobe delivered to your door regularly. Most clothing rental services also offer accessories such as handbags and jewelry, too.

Rent the Runway is one of the best-known clothing rental companies, offering women the chance to wear designer clothes for a fraction of the dollars to buy them. From a one-sleeve Badgley Mischka floral that sells for $800 to a $1,400 Red Valentino embroidered full-length gown, the formal options are plentiful, along with attire for work, weekends, clubbing and outdoor activities. Rent the Runway offers eight items a month for $144, 12 for $193 or 16 for $235.  Nuuly is another popular clothing rental site, with a few more casual and lower-priced items that would cost $120 to $300 or more to buy. It’s owned by URBN, the parent company of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. Renters pay $88 a month for six items.

Armoire makes styling suggestions based on answers to a consumer questionnaire. You can rent four items a month for $69 or seven for $89.  Also check out local, independent shops. For example, at Valhalla in Tampa, Florida, clients pay $49 a month for unlimited access to the store’s 6,000 items of clothing.

  1. Men’s Clothing for Special Occasions and Beyond

Men also like the chance to wear expensive threads they can’t afford on a regular basis.  Taelor is a subscription service including styling support for men. Subscribers pay $88 a month for two shipments, each with four items of clothing. According to Taelor, each box contains $800 worth of clothes.

  1. Toys

A business born during the pandemic, Tiny Earth Toys is a subscription service that delivers high-quality toys to families each month. Since children often tire of their toys quickly, and their abilities change rapidly when they are younger, regularly changing the lineup is smart.  Tiny Earth employs two early childhood educators who help select wooden toys such as stacking rings, puzzles and wooden people, trees, bridges and trucks. All are “open ended,” meaning the children can manipulate them in their own way for a variety of activities.

Tiny Earth charges $35 a month for five sustainable wood toys. For $48, you’ll receive five to eight wooden toys a month, and for $65 a month, you get 10 toys a month. Play on!

  1. Handbags

Again, whether you want a knockout bag for a special occasion or to add some variety to your rotation on a monthly basis, renting could be the way to go.

Bag Borrow or Steal is one of several ways you can rent a designer purse. Customers can rent a bag for one month with free shipping. Choices include a small Gucci disco bag for $125, a quilted Chanel tote for $400 a month and a Prada envelope bag with a gold chain for $100 a month. If you were to buy these items, they’d run from $1,000 to $5,000.  Other handbag rental sites include Luxury Fashion Rentals, which has similar prices and policies. Bag Romance offers a great feature of showing the retail price of bags for rent. For example, a black Chanel clutch that rents for $500 a month sells for $4,600 at a store.
