Blake Shelton Leaving The Voice
The Voice coach Blake Shelton is leaving the show after Season 23. He announced his impending exit from the show in a statement Tuesday on Instagram. “I’ve been wrestling with this for a while and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from The Voice after next season,” Shelton wrote. “This show has changed my life in every way for the better and it will always feel like home to me,” he said. “It’s been a hell of a ride over these 12 years of chair turns and I want to thank everyone at The Voice from NBC, every producer, the writers, musicians, crew and catering people, you are the best. It takes a lot of work, passion, and adult beverages (Ha!) to pull off a live show twice a week.” Shelton has been a coach on The Voice since the show’s premiere in 2011. He met his wife, singer Gwen Stefani, on the show in 2014 when she first joined the series as a coach. Season 23 will premiere in spring 2023 and feature Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan as coaches. Season 22 premiered in September and features Shelton, Stefani, Camila Cabello and John Legend.

Khloe Kardashian Removes Tumor From Face
Khloe Kardashian announced Tuesday that she had survived a second bout of skin cancer, this time on her face. She said her “incredibly rare” tumor was removed by Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Garth Fisher after the reality TV star noticed a bump that wouldn’t go away. “I decided to get it biopsied 7 months after realizing it was not budging,” she wrote in an Instagram post. Kardashian had initially thought the bump was a pimple, but later was seen by multiple doctors who told her the tumor was “incredibly rare for someone [her] age.” She was told to have surgery immediately after the biopsy results were returned. “All my margins appear clear and now we are onto the healing process,” Kardashian wrote over a picture of her face with a bandage. “You’ll continue to see my bandages and when I’m allowed, you’ll probably see a scar (and an indentation in my cheek from the tumor being removed).” Kardashian had been wearing a bandage on her face for a few weeks.

Idol Runner-Up Dies
“American Idol” runner-up Willie Spence died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was 23. He was in Tennessee at the time of the accident, local news outlet Douglas Now reported. “We are devastated about the passing of our beloved ‘American Idol’ family member, Willie Spence,” the show said in a statement via Twitter. “He was a true talent who lit up every room he entered and will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to his loved ones.” Katharine McPhee, who performed a duet with Spence during his Season 19 appearance, posted videos mourning him on her Instagram Story. “I received very tragic news tonight,” she wrote above a video of her and Spence meeting. “Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old. Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised. “God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.” During the Season 19 finale, Spence sang “Georgia on My Mind,” “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Stand Up.”
Anne Heche Estate
Anne Heche died with about $400,000 to her name, according to new court documents — as her ex-boyfriend and adult son are set to battle it out over her estate. Her ex-boyfriend James Tupper appeared in Los Angeles court Tuesday, where a judge shot down his bid to be appointed guardian ad litem of the 13-year-old son, Atlas Tupper, he shared with Heche. James has been locked in a contentious battle with Heche’s eldest son, Homer Laffoon, over control of her estate following her Aug. 12 death — arguing that he is “the person with the highest priority of appointment.” But Judge Lee R. Bogdanoff reminded James’ lawyer, Christopher Johnson, on Tuesday, “We’re not here to pick like the best person. I’m here to decide if [Laffoon’s] qualified, or disqualified,” People reported. James shook his head, which infuriated the judge. “Why are you shaking your head?” Bogdanoff asked. “It’s very disrespectful. Don’t shake your head at me ever if you’re going to appear again. Please take your hands out of your pockets, sir. You wanna say something?” James replied, “Sure. I don’t feel that his older brother is going to look out for him. We’ve waited two months to get into the apartment.” Tupper went on to claim that his son has not been allowed to obtain his belongings that are still at Heche’s apartment.

Barney The Dinosaur Exposed In New Doc
“Barney & Friends” was popular in the early 1990s, making a star out of the title character. The character was an avatar of goodness, endearing himself to countless young children around the world even as he sometimes grated on their beleaguered parents. He was inescapable. But not everyone considered Barney a friend, a phenomenon at the heart of a new Peacock documentary series called “I Love You, You Hate Me.” The docuseries explores how, throughout the ‘90s and early 2000s, Barney turned into a cultural punching bag, the subject of disdain from adults and derision from kids desperate to disavow their childish pastimes. He was the Jar Jar Binks of kids’ TV. School-age kids added violent lyrics to the “Barney & Friends” theme song. Bob West, a veteran performer who provided the voice for Barney from 1992 to 2000, recalls the production of “Barney & Friends” as a blissful experience that was sometimes shadowed by darker intrusions from the wider world, like a string of death threats he says he received via email. Thirty years after Barney first showed up on TV, however, West still believes that Barney’s friends outnumber his haters.

STUPID NEWS
It’s Giant Pumpkin Season!
Minnesota resident Travis Gienger’s 2,560 pound pumpkin won the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, Calif. The event brings growers together to celebrate the agricultural heritage of the bay area with giant vegetables squaring off on the California city’s main street. Gienger took the top prize with his pumpkin named “Maverick” after driving the behemoth 35 hours from his home in Anoka, Minn., to Half Moon Bay. Gienger also won in 2020 with a pumpkin that weighed in at 2350 pounds. “They all said it was a once in a lifetime type thing and gosh, hopefully we can do it for two times in a lifetime,” Gieinger told ABC7 News. While “Maverick” has broken the U.S. record it still hasn’t usurped the title of “world’s largest pumpkin.” That honor goes to Italian grower Stefano Cutripi, who earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records when his 2,703 pound pumpkin won the 2021 European Pumpkin Weighing Championship in Ludwigsburg Germany.

Green Goblin Arrested
A woman accused of being a member of the so-called “green goblin gang” that attacked two teenagers on a Manhattan subway train turned herself on Monday and was released Tuesday without bail. The NYPD said Mariam Issouf was arrested Monday in connection with the Oct. 2 assault on the northbound N platform at the 42 Street-Times Square subway station. Two 19-year-old female victims told NYPD officers they were engaged in a verbal dispute with a group of unidentified individuals. As the dispute escalated, the victims were pushed and punched as they tried to enter a train car and had items stolen from them, police said. The suspects, who were captured on video wearing neon-green bodysuits, fled the location. Both victims sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention, police said. A mother of one of the victims said her daughter was celebrating her birthday when she was attacked and called the suspects “complete animals.”

Magic Mushroom Attack
A United Airlines flight from Miami to Washington’s Dulles International Airport last week was a bad trip after a passenger attacked crew members while high on psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, according to federal prosecutors. According to an affidavit filed in Eastern Virginia district court, about an hour into United Airlines Flight 2116, Cherruy Sevilla began exhibiting “disturbing” and “uncontrolled” behavior. Prosecutors said Sevilla broke a piece off a locked lavatory door, opening the door while another passenger was inside. According to the affidavit, Sevilla wandered around the plane, “running up and down the aisle, clapping loudly near the cockpit and yelling obscenities.” Sevilla got in other passengers’ faces, “staring and smiling at them,” FBI Special Agent Daniel Markley wrote. Sevilla wouldn’t remain seated after flight attendants asked him to and, instead, his screams and outbursts grew louder, according to prosecutors. Sevilla, laying on the floor of the airplane, jumped up and twisted a flight attendant’s breast after she “calmly” instructed him to take his seat, Markley wrote. Other flight attendants, passengers and a law enforcement officer on the flight had to subdue him.

12 Ways to Score Free Stuff on Amazon — And Not Just From Product Reviews
The Penny Hoarder
- Become a Top Amazon Reviewer
So we’ve established that the best way to get free stuff on Amazon is with an invite into the Vine program. But how do you get invited? It does require some work on your part and the first step to getting that invite is becoming a Top Amazon reviewer. Believe it or not, the company tracks the best and most prolific reviewers, posting it all on a rankings board. It’s not hard to become a Top Amazon reviewer, and we’ve laid out all of the steps you need to take to join the upper echelon. It’s important to remember that Amazon values quality reviews and the number of helpful votes you accumulate is critical, so be sure you think about the kind of information consumers would care about and craft a well-written, detailed and grammatically-correct review.
Another helpful tip is to look for products without a lot of reviews, because yours is more likely to be read and earn “Helpful Votes.” Focus your reviews on the types of items that you would like to get for free, as becoming an expert in a specific category helps achieve Top Reviewer status more quickly.
- Get Invited to Be a Vine Reviewer
The early days of Amazon reviewing was like the Wild West – companies sent out free products or other compensation in exchange for positive reviews, despite the actual quality of the item. Unsurprisingly, this led to companies manipulating reviews and “earning” inflated scores for subpar products. Amazon responded in 2016 by prohibiting incentivized reviews, with the exception being those facilitated through Amazon Vine.
In this program, companies send Amazon products which they distribute to trusted reviewers for free. Then, Vine identifies the most helpful and trusted reviewers (Vine Voices) and invites them to give their opinions on new and pre-release products. Voices aren’t under any pressure to post positive reviews, and sometimes aren’t even required to write one. Vine membership is by invite-only; you can’t apply to join the program. Amazon watches out for customers who post reviews frequently, are considered the most helpful by customers, and write about the types of items that are typically featured in the program.
Vine is a more transparent program because the decision-making about who reviews what products is in the hands of Amazon. Vendors have no influence over which Vine Voices review their products.
- Use Influencer (or Micro-Influencer) Status for Freebies
Let’s admit it: most of us don’t have the kind of social media following that gives us influencer status. But marketing departments also see the value in micro-influencers — social media users that have smaller, intensely-dedicated followings. If you have a blog, Youtube channel or a certain number of social media followers, signing up with a company like Tomoson is one way to get free stuff from Amazon. Tomoson’s business model is to connect brands with influencers — if you meet the right criteria you’ll be selected for a campaign. You don’t necessarily need to have a huge number of followers; brands care most about someone with an audience that fits the niche of their product.
These reviews or mentions will be posted on your social media so you don’t need to worry about violating Amazon’s terms by receiving a free item for review — though FTC laws require you to disclose your relationship with the brand you’re posting about.
- Tread Carefully With Facebook Groups and Third Party Review Sites
When searching for Amazon freebies, Facebook groups and third party review sites are a popular recommendation. It’s true these groups can provide vouchers or gift cards for items you’ve purchased on Amazon — usually, in exchange for a positive review — but you need to be careful.
Many sellers on these Facebook groups and review sites aren’t reputable and are violating Amazon’s incentivized reviews policy or soliciting fake paid reviews. This is most risky for them but could result in your Amazon account being suspended. Additionally, most of the products on these sites and groups aren’t name brands and appear to be low-quality.
- Free 30-Day Trial of Amazon Prime
If you’ve never had a subscription to Amazon Prime or it’s been a year since your last subscription expired, you are entitled to a free 30-Day trial of Amazon Prime. This membership gives you access to ad-free Amazon Music, Prime Video, Prime Reading and Amazon Photo, plus free shipping on items ordered through Amazon.
- Amazon Music Free
Like most streaming services, Amazon Music Unlimited has a free three-month trial for new subscribers, giving you unlimited, on-demand, ad-free music and podcasts. Of course, you’ll need to remember to end the subscription before your three months are up or you’ll be charged for a month ($7.99). Signing up for a free 30–day trial of Prime also gives you unlimited access to the service’s deep library.
But did you know that you don’t even need to sign up for a trial to access free songs on Amazon? Head over to the Free Songs page on Amazon Music where you can listen to and download thousands of free tracks.
- Free Kindle Books
There are a couple ways to get free Kindle books on Amazon. If you’re already a Prime Member, the First Reads program entitles you to one free Kindle book a month. Even if you don’t have Prime, you can use First Reads to pay just $1.99 for one book a month. Plus, you have access to thousands of free Kindle books in the company’s library.
- Audible Audiobooks
If audio books are more your speed, Amazon offers a free 30-day Audible trial. This includes one credit for a free audiobook that you get to keep after the trial is over.
- Free Cloud Storage
If you’re an Amazon customer, you can get access to free cloud storage. Every customer has access to 5GB of cloud storage for photos, videos and other files through Amazon Drive. These files can be accessed on your desktop, tablet and mobile phone.
- Free Baby Box With Amazon Registry
If you’re expecting a new baby, sign up with Amazon Registry for a free gift with goodies for the newborn and parents, with a value of up to $35. The program also has a wedding registry which offers “bonus gifts” for the couple.
- Get a $10 Gift Card for Signing Up With Amazon Cash
Who doesn’t love free cash? As an incentive for new customers, if you add $50 in Amazon Cash to your account, you’ll get a $10 credit towards your first purchase.
- Get a $100 Amazon Gift Card After Rewards Card Approval
If you’re doing a lot of shopping for everyday items on Amazon, consider an Amazon Rewards Card. For one, you’ll get a $100 gift card as soon as you’re approved for the card. Then, you’ll earn 5% back at Amazon.com and Amazon stores, 2% back at gas stations, restaurants and drug stores, and 1% on utilities and rideshare. If you’re also a Prime member, you’ll earn 5% back at Whole Foods grocery stores.
- Get Gift Cards With Amazon Trade-In
Like everyone, you probably have a ton of old electronics laying around the house. Instead of sending them off to the e-waste collection, why not turn obsolete devices into Amazon credit? Amazon Trade-In is a program that gives customers the chance to exchange their unused electronics into gift cards. Thousands of items are eligible for the program and don’t necessarily need to be Amazon Devices.
